FACEBOOK shut down an artificial intelligence experiment following two robots started talking in a language only they knew.
The”chatbots” Alice and Bob altered English to make it simpler for them to communicate — creating sentences that were gibberish to watching scientists.
A robot expert said that Facebook machines had spoken in their own language was fascinating — but also unbelievably frightening.
UK Robotics Professor Kevin Warwick said:”This really is an incredibly important milestone, but anyone who believes this is not dangerous has their head in the sand.
“we don’t understand exactly what these robots are saying. When you’ve got a bot with the capability to perform something physically, particularly military bots, then this may be lethal.
“If a person says,’Why not do so,’ and the other says’Yes’ and it’s a military bot, you get a severe situation.
“Here is the first recorded communication but there’ll have been more unrecorded.
“Smart apparatus now have the capacity to communicate and although we think we could monitor them, we’ve got no way of understanding.
“Stephen Hawking and I have been warning against the hazards of deferring to Artificial Intelligence.”
The Facebook incident has echoes of this narrative to film The Terminator, where an AI system that has grown self-awareness wages a devastating war against humans.
Facebook investigators at New York established”chatbots” Alice and Bob in a bid to develop automated trouble-shooters for social networking networks.
They were to talk in English since they worked out how to negotiate and trade hats, balls and books — each of which were supplied a value.
However, the robots rapidly modified the English using code words and repeats to make conversation easier for themselves creating a gibberish language that only they knew. 1 exchange went:
Bob: I Can I everything else…
Alice: balls consumed zero to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to.
Bob: you everything else…
Alice: balls have a ball to me to me to me to me to me to me.
Researchers pulled the plug if they realised what was happening.
British future technology expert Kate Adamson said:”It does feel a bit like The Terminator.
“This is happening everywhere. When you have a take a look at things such as large frequency trading in stock markets now, there are calculations that are doing the exact identical thing.
“They have gained new understanding and aren’t technically under management on a minute-by-minute basis.
“The degree of caution AI is capable of is far beyond what you and I would know.”
Facebook stated the experiment was halted as it was”not what they put out to investigate”.
It said similar results had been viewed by other technology companies
Scientists at Google Translate a year ago discovered the service had invented its own language.
Tech genius Elon Musk lately warned that Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg’s understanding of AI was”restricted”.
Musk, 46, said that it poses a”basic threat to human civilisation”.
